I really enjoyed the session today, Jodi is so knowledgable and a great presenter.

Great training. Very clear, easy to understand and with great examples and content that can be applied.

Fruitful learning! There are real clinical experience sharing and theoretical concepts helping me to deal with children with aggression.

Course Overview:

When therapists take into account that the world of children is vastly different from that of adults we can better connect with them, understand their perspective, and make sense of their behaviour. Aggression and aggressive behaviour are just ways children are communicating to us about their inner model of how the world works, their experiences, and frequently their trauma. Unfortunately, aggression in childhood even in the therapeutic playroom, is often looked at through lenses of pathology and fear. In this online course, we will focus on the unique opportunities children who demonstrate aggression provide in play therapy when our work is centered in viewing play, even aggressive play, as communication, understanding our counter transference and employing limit setting that facilitates prosocialness.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

1) Explore the various meanings of aggressive behaviour.

 2) Understand how limit setting can be used to help children make pro-social changes.

 3) Describe how counter transference impacts the relationship with the child.

 4) Engage in authentic learning opportunities.

 5) Challenge the typical ways aggressive behaviour is viewed.

Please note, this is a LIVE and INTERACTIVE training event. We don't record this.

What ideas are explored?

  • What are the potential meanings of children’s aggressive play in the playroom?
  • Why the way you set limits matters when the play is aggressive.
  • How trauma and aggressive play are connected.
  • How counter transference can inform you clinical practice.
  • Shifting the lens from pathologizing to normalizing.

Training methods will include:

  • Authentic small group learning opportunities in break out rooms.
  • Viewing example play therapy sessions.
  • Processing and debriefing of examples from viewed play therapy sessions.
  • Lecture with question and answer.
  • Clinical examples from over 25 years of play therapy with children.

Who should attend?

Psychologists, social workers, counsellors, play therapists, case workers, child and family workers, pastoral workers, other allied health professionals and students who are currently working or intend to work with children.
